System developer

 

Position Title: Software Developer
Annual Salary: R468,459 – R551,823 (Level 09). Appointment subject to signing of a performance agreement.
Location: Pretoria

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

An accredited National Diploma or Bachelor's degree (3–4 years) in Information Technology, Software Engineering, Multimedia Development, or an equivalent qualification at NQF Level 6. Must have at least 3 years of hands-on experience in software or systems development. Should be well-versed in public sector IT frameworks and policies. Solid programming expertise is essential, with exposure to technologies such as SQL, HTML, PHP, VB, C#, and .Net.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement both desktop and web-based applications.
  • Oversee internal and outsourced system acquisitions within the department.
  • Provide training to end users and develop technical documentation.
  • Offer expert input on software development projects and strategies.
  • Handle system maintenance activities, including updates and security.
  • Facilitate system testing phases, including user acceptance and functional validation with stakeholders.
  • Assess and design processes and data models aligned with user and business needs.
  • Collaborate with users to gather and consolidate system requirements.
  • Map and analyze business processes; prepare workflow diagrams for new solutions.
     

Ideal Candidate Profile:

A driven software developer who works well with deadlines and collaborates effectively with others. Must display integrity, professionalism, and strong interpersonal skills. Excellent at maintaining confidentiality, particularly with sensitive HR information. Should be skilled in verbal and written communication, have the ability to liaise with both internal teams and external partners, and be confident in making presentations. CONTROL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

 

REMUNERATION: R551,493 – R631,056 per year


LOCATION: Naval Base Simon’s Town – Facilities Division


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
A National Diploma in Engineering or a closely related field. Minimum of 6 years of post-qualification technical experience. A valid driver’s license is required.


Additional Requirements (Key Skills):
A Civil Engineering qualification is essential. Experience in civil works and contract/site management will be advantageous. Applicants must have relevant knowledge of the building and construction sector. Must possess leadership capabilities, project oversight, and supervisory experience. Effective planning, problem-solving, and analytical thinking skills are necessary.

The role requires strong presentation abilities, familiarity with strategic business planning, and the ability to interpret and contribute to policy development. The candidate should be capable of creating operational strategies and documents, applying project management methodologies, and managing unexpected changes. Skills in mentoring, converting feedback into process improvements, and communicating concepts at both operational and strategic levels are also important.

Proficiency in compiling business plans, understanding of legal compliance, financial oversight, technical reporting, engineering software, technical consulting, and R&D are key.

GISC TECHNICIAN

 

SALARY: R391,671 – R418,332 per annum


LOCATION: Fleet Command HQ – SA Navy Hydrographic Office, Silvermine, Tokai


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A National Diploma in Geomatics (GISc), Cartography, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a GISc Technician after qualification. A valid driver’s license is mandatory.


Additional Skills & Competencies:
Experience in marine cartography would be an asset. Practical knowledge of geo-database creation and management is essential, along with familiarity with GIS tools and spatial data handling. A solid understanding of GIS/cartographic theories, standards, and practices is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong planning, organisational and interpersonal skills, with sound decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.

Effective communication in English (written and spoken) is necessary. Competency in Microsoft Office applications and general office equipment operation is expected. Candidates should also be available to travel locally and internationally if required.

  • Creating paper-based nautical charts
  • Maintaining materials used in nautical chart production
  • Reproducing nautical charts as required

ICT OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree or National Diploma in Information Technology
  • At least 5 years of practical, hands-on experience in the IT field
  • Must have a valid driver's license
     

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and manage first- and second-level IT support across the department
  • Maintain and support internal ICT systems, including oversight of the department’s website
  • Lead the planning, rollout, and upkeep of IT projects at both provincial and district levels
  • Organize and manage ICT training sessions for both the unit and wider department
  • Develop and implement procurement procedures and ICT-related policies
