SALARY: R397,116 per year (Level 08)
LOCATION: Fezile Dabi District, Sasolburg
REQUIREMENTS:
- Relevant National Diploma in Environmental Health, Animal Health, or Veterinary Public Health
- Registration with the applicable South African statutory body is preferred
- Valid driver’s license (Code EB)
- 1 to 2 years of experience post-qualification
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee meat hygiene and food safety by inspecting import/export products, animals, and their documentation to ensure compliance with international standards
- Enforce laws under the Meat Safety Act
- Conduct audits and regular inspections of abattoirs and sterilization plants to monitor hygiene standards through routine sampling
- Provide recommendations on the registration, upgrading, and repair of facilities
- Implement and verify the Hygiene Assessment System (HAS)
- Train meat inspectors, slaughterhouse workers, and quality control personnel
- Ensure game harvesting complies with national and international regulations
- Promote legislative compliance through public awareness, extension services, and enforcement actions targeting food safety
- Advise communities on informal slaughtering and exemptions, assess slaughtering needs, and contribute to departmental animal culling projects
- Deliver training, technical support, and health education on food safety to communities
- Investigate and address illegal slaughtering in coordination with relevant authorities
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure regulatory adherence
- Audit export facilities (e.g., dairies, cutting plants, processing plants) to confirm compliance with national and international trade requirements
- Monitor game harvesting practices to ensure conformity with relevant standards
- Collect samples for disease surveillance projects, including BSE (brain stem), bacteriological samples (water, effluent, surfaces, carcasses), and residue testing (hormones, pesticides, antibiotics)
- Perform administrative duties such as data collection, database management, and compiling monthly and quarterly reports
- Contribute to operational planning within veterinary public health
