Position Title: Senior Marine Systems Engineer
Annual Compensation: R1,266,450 – R1,446,921
Location: Naval Engineering Services, Fleet Command HQ – Simon’s Town


Qualifications and Experience:

A recognized degree in Engineering (BEng or BSc Eng) or a related field is required. A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience post-registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA is essential. A valid driver’s license is required. Experience in marine systems design and development is highly beneficial.

  • Skilled in delivering presentations, conducting interviews, and leading negotiations
  • Effective at conducting research and problem-solving
  • Proven ability to manage resources and lead teams
  • Familiarity with applicable policies, procedures, and engineering regulations

  • Knowledge of legal, operational, and financial compliance in the engineering context

  • Experience in research, development, and innovation is a plus
     

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop guidelines and advisory material related to weapon systems engineering
  • Create system designs and engineering concepts for naval applications
  • Oversee acceptance processes for weapon systems engineering
  • Establish and maintain design and equipment standards for weapon systems
  • Lead and coordinate related engineering projects and tasks
  • Manage the daily operations of the Weapon Systems Engineering unit

CONTROL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN GRADE A ELECTRONIC

 

Position Title: Technical Maintenance Supervisor – Communications Systems
Annual Salary: R551,493 – R631,056
Work Location: Naval Communications Centre, Silvermine – Fleet Command HQ, Tokai, Cape Town

Minimum Requirements:

A National Diploma in Engineering or a closely related qualification is essential. Candidates must have at least 6 years of relevant technical experience following qualification. A valid driver’s license is mandatory.

Key Competencies and Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of HF Radio systems, both practical use and theory 
  • Skilled in diagnosing and resolving faults, soldering, and using technical instruments and tools
  • Capable of reading technical schematics and manuals for troubleshooting purposes
  • Competent in component-level diagnostics and performing hands-on repairs
  • Strong leadership and team supervision abilities
  • Effective planning, coordination, and analytical thinking skills
  • Able to produce detailed technical reports
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance and legal standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English across all levels
  • Comfortable using MS Office tools and computer-aided design/engineering software
  • Project management knowledge is advantageous
     

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee maintenance and repair of all communication, electrical, and support equipment
  • Supervise both civilian and uniformed team members in the unit
  • Manage installation projects, upgrades, decommissioning of systems, and handbook distribution
  • Plan and coordinate training for technical staff
  • Ensure the safety and security of personnel, equipment, and sensitive documentation
  • Handle budgeting, internal requisitions, and procurement of supplies and parts
     

Additional Information:

  • Candidates must be registered with ECSA as Professional Engineering Technicians
  • Personal transport is an asset
  • Must be willing to work in an underground facility with artificial lighting and ventilation
  • Flexibility to work overtime, including nights and weekends, is required

Essential Competencies and Skills:

  • Practical experience in a design, logistics support analysis, or logistics planning environment is vital
  • Hands-on involvement in logistics plan formulation, support design specifications, and validation processes is preferred
  • Familiarity with support elements in logistics baselines is advantageous
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles
  • Strong communication abilities (both oral and written), analytical thinking, and technical interpretation skills
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Proficient with MS Office tools and engineering design software
  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Capable of working in high-pressure environments and meeting deadlines
  • Skilled in technical consulting, project coordination, and report preparation
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements and financial oversight within an engineering context

  • Familiarity with naval vessel standards and military procurement protocols is a plus
  • Experience in refit procedures and engineering design planning is advantageous
  • Capable of producing and presenting clear, technical documentation and reports
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in interpreting technical data
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Caddie, and the full Microsoft Office suite

QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working within a commercial shipyard or marine construction design setting will be highly regarded.
  • Essential experience includes work within a marine or mechanical drafting office, specifically in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture disciplines.
  • Comprehensive understanding of classification societies’ standards and International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations for surface vessels is crucial.
  • Familiarity with naval surface vessel regulations and naval stores procurement processes would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of vessel refit protocols is considered an advantage.
  • Strong grasp of design procedures and planning methodologies is vital.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver detailed technical reports in English is required.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the capacity to interpret complex data is necessary.
  • Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD or Caddie, along with Microsoft Office applications, is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills coupled with leadership experience.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and adhere to deadlines.

  • Oversee and manage the Constructive Section within the Naval Design Office.

  • Manage projects, tasks, and functions associated with the Constructive Section.
  • Coordinate and organize the operations of the Constructive Section effectively.

Essential Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Understanding of:
    • Departmental regulations and internal procedures
    • The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), 1993 and its updated regulations
    • South African National Standards (SANS), especially where incorporated into legislation
    • COIDA (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act) and UIA (Unemployment Insurance Act)
  • Key Skills:
    • Strong planning and organizational skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
    • Presentation, interviewing, negotiation, and facilitation skills

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently plan and carry out workplace inspections to ensure compliance with the OHS Act and associated standards and regulations
  • Verify that employers are properly registered under COIDA and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
  • Investigate complaints and incidents related to health and safety violations, and take enforcement action where needed, including appearing as a witness in court
  • Conduct scheduled proactive inspections and compile detailed reports based on findings
  • Drive awareness campaigns and educational initiatives around labour laws, assess their impact, and report on outcomes
  • Support senior-level inspection planning and reporting by assisting with regional strategy development, data analysis, and consolidated reporting on inspection activities
